Immigration Medical Exam Procedure

An immigration application will require a comprehensive medical exam, which can only be performed by a panel physician. The process of medical exam goes this way:

1. The medical clinic staff or panel physician will request ID proof. If you have been recommended for more testing, such as an x-ray or another test, you may be required to provide identification once again when you go in for those additional tests.

2. Then they will start to fill out a questionnaire regarding your medical history that consists of data about your past medical history, present and past medications, and any present medical situations.

This questionnaire aims to know the information related to any current or previous medical issues.

It is essential to provide the panel physician with information on any prior or current medical issues you have. If you don’t, the processing of your medical exam can take a little bit longer.

4. Then you will have your physical examination in which the personnel at the medical clinic or the doctor will:

  • check your weight
  • measure your height
  • examine your hearing and vision
  • take your blood pressure
  • feel your pulse
  • listen to your heart and lungs
  • feel your abdomen
  • examine the motion in your limbs
  • look at your skin

5. After that, you may be required to have chest X-rays and laboratory testing, but this will depend on your age. The doctor will refer you to a specialist for more testing depending on the results of your medical exam. You must do this as soon as possible to prevent any delays in the processing of your medical examination.

Why is an IME needed?

An Immigration Medical Exam is required to assess the health of the immigrants and identify any medical conditions that could create a public health or safety risk.

Here are three reasons that would prove you medically inadmissible:

  • You’re a threat to public health
  • You may be a threat to public safety
  • You require a higher demand for social & health services

Hence, medical exams help to prevent the entry of individuals who may be inadmissible due to health concerns, ensuring the well-being of both the newcomers and the country.

Additionally, it helps Canada manage the potential burden on its healthcare system by identifying and addressing health issues early on. This helps minimize the impact of sick immigrants on public resources.
