On the 21st August 2025, ETS (organization behind TOEFL) announced that Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) would soon accept TOEFL Essentials scores for its Canada immigration pathways such as Express Entry, PNP and other PR visa programs. This means that very soon, PR applicants will have one more English test option.
However, this is not live yet and IRCC will update its website as soon as the acceptance starts.
What is the TOEFL Essential exam?
TOEFL Essentials is an English test from ETS that measures listening, reading, writing, and speaking. It involves tasks that reflect real-world communication. The test is designed to be fast and practical. It takes only 1.5 hours and is delivered at secure test centres.
Language Tests Accepted by IRCC
Until IRCC turns TOEFL Essentials on, you must use the tests IRCC already accepts. These are CELPIP, IELTS, PTE-Core, TEF Canada, and TCF Canada. Your language test must be less than 2 years old on the day you submit your profile and your PR application. If your test expires, IRCC can refuse your application.
Current Language Requirements for Canada Immigration
Most of the immigration programs will require you to score at least CLB or NCLC 4 in your language test. However, competitive pathways such as Express Entry have higher requirements. The higher your language test score, the better your chances of getting a PR visa.
