About Quebec French Language Proficiency Requirements

As we know, Quebec has the freedom to choose its own candidates; how many candidates to invite; and on what basis will they be eligible. Everything that Quebec does in regard to immigration, is its own choice.

As of June, 2023, candidates only approved to be eligible to receive an invitation if they declared that they had oral proficiency in the French language. To be specific, candidates need to declare that their proficiency is either level 7 or higher than that.

If a candidate does not meet this requirement, they might not be eligible for permanent residency in Quebec. Hence, having good French proficiency is really necessary.

Do you know why Quebec has increased the language proficiency target? Well, it’s basically to keep the traditional culture of the province alive. Lately, Canada has been seeing a decline in the Francophone population. And this is why Quebec and Canada have started focusing on inviting candidates with a higher proficiency level in French language. This is to make sure that the population of Francophones is not declining and the cultural diversity is also maintained.
