A Canada Study Visa, commonly referred to as a study permit, is an official document issued by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) that allows foreign nationals to study at designated learning institutions (DLIs) in Canada for programs longer than six months. It is mandatory for most international students who plan to pursue full-time academic, professional, or vocational training in Canada. The study permit is not a visa; it does not allow entry into Canada by itself. Most students will also need a temporary resident visa (TRV) or an electronic travel authorization (eTA), which IRCC issues along with the study permit when approved.

Steps to get a Canadian student visa

Apply to a Designated Learning Institution (DLI)

Start by choosing a DLI-approved college or university in Canada. Once accepted, you’ll receive a Letter of Acceptance (LOA), required for the visa application.

Step 2: Gather All Required Documents

Prepare your financial proofs, tuition payment receipts, IELTS scores, passport, and a strong SOP. If you're applying under SDS, a GIC certificate and upfront medical are mandatory.

33

Step 3: Submit Your Application Online

Apply online through the official IRCC portal. SDS (Student Direct Stream) applications are processed faster (usually within 20 calendar days), while regular applications may take longer.

28

Step 4: Biometrics and Medical Exam

Schedule your biometrics appointment at a VAC (Visa Application Centre). Also complete your upfront medical exam through a panel physician recognized by IRCC.

29

Step 5: Wait for Visa Decision (PPR)

After reviewing your application, IRCC may request additional documents. Once approved, you’ll receive a Passport Request (PPR) for visa stamping.
