72 workers invited by Ontario to apply for PNP

“ The third In-Demand Skills stream draw in Ontario was also the largest to date. ”

Ontario welcomed 72 immigrant candidates to register for a provincial nomination on September 22.

Under its new intake method, the Ontario Immigrant Nominee Program (OINP) staged it’s third-ever In-Demand Skills stream draw. The new Expression of Interest (EOI) system in Ontario replaces the previous first-come, first-served paradigm, and allows interested candidates to register at any time for a chance to be invited by the province. To put it another way, they “express their interest” in applying for a provincial nomination under the Ontario Provincial Nominee Program (PNP).

A total of 65 people were chosen in the general draw. Ontario also sponsored a drawing for the Regional Immigration Pilot, inviting seven people to participate. This stream does not have an EOI score requirement.

About In-Demand Skills Stream

This immigration programme places a greater emphasis on regional demand than on occupational skill levels. Many government-designated “high-skilled” vocations are the focus of many immigration initiatives. Despite this, Ontario continues to face labour shortages in “low skilled” occupations.

Enter the Stream of In-Demand Skills. With nine months of cumulative work experience in Ontario within the previous three years, foreign workers with suitable job offers in the province can file for a nomination. Seasonal work is ineligible for meeting the work requirement. If the candidate fulfilled the required number of work hours, part-time work may be acceptable. Over the period of 18 months, the quantity of work hours must match either 1,200 hours of paid employment in one job. Alternatively, for people with multiple jobs, it would need working at least 30 hours per week for nine months, for a total of 1,200 hours.

There are a few further prerequisites for eligibility. Candidates must, among other things, have a high school diploma, a language score of at least 4 in all proficiencies, and appropriate settlement funds.
