There are two kinds of work permits available: Employer-Specific Work Permit and Open Work Permit. 

Employer-Specific Work Permit

An Employer-Specific Work Permit lets international workers work in Canada for a particular employer.

Open Work Permit

An Open Work Permit allows the worker to work for almost any employer in Canada.

  • must prove that you will leave Canada after work permit expires
  • while you are in Canada, obey the laws and regulations
  • have no criminal activity record

  • provide immigration officers all the documents that they require
  • be healthy or in good health
  • have a medical exam
  • not plan on working with any “ineligible” employer

These are the basic eligibility requirements of a Canada work permit that all applicants must meet. Meeting these requirements may grant you a work permit. Hence, you may be legally entitled to work in Canada. 

What does legally entitled to work in Canada mean?

Being legally entitled to work in Canada means your immigration status is legal and you also have a work permit. In case you are a permanent resident or a Canadian citizen, you don’t need to apply for a work permit. 

Can a Canadian company sponsor work visa?

A Canadian employer may secure a Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) for an international worker which will help in getting a work permit, but they do not “sponsor” a work visa.

How long is a work permit valid for in Canada?

Usually, a Canadian work permit is valid for about 1-2 years. But the actual validity of your work permit is based on the type of work permit you are applying for.
