Who can apply through SDS?

  1. the applicant must be a resident of one of the following countries:
  • Antigua and Barbuda
  • Brazil
  • China
  • Colombia
  • Costa Rica
  • India

  • Philippines

  • Saint Vincent and the Grenadines
  • Trinidad and Tobago
  • Vietnam
  1. should be living outside Canada at the time of application
  2. if necessary, get a medical exam
  3. show an acceptance letter from a post-secondary DLI
  4. have a recent secondary or post secondary school transcript
  5. prove that you paid the first year tuition fee
  6. have minimum score needed for a language tests
  7. have a Guaranteed Investment Certificate (GIC) of $10,000
  8.  if necessary, get a police clearance certificate

Apart from these requirements, the applicant might need to submit a few other documents too. Based on your country of residence, the visa officer may need you to provide some more documents to process your application.

Student Direct Stream Canada Processing Time

Student Direct Stream Canada application processing time is within 20 calendar days, if the application meets the requirements. IRCC aims to process applications (the ones meeting all the requirements) under SDS within 20 calendar days. 

But, some applications may take longer to process. For instance, if the applicant hasn’t submitted necessary documents properly or forgot to submit some of them, they will be reminded by IRCC to submit the documents. This reminder will no doubt take further time in application processing. 

Moreover, if the applicant has not given their biometrics at the suitable time, it will further require time to process the student permit application.
