The Alberta Farm Stream is designed to provide pathways for experienced farmers who wish to establish or invest in a farming business in Alberta. It is part of the Alberta Advantage Immigration Program (AAIP). Moreover, AAIP offers 4 streams for entrepreneurs which are the Rural Entrepreneur Stream, Graduate Entrepreneur Stream, and Foreign Graduate Entrepreneur Stream.

Eligibility Requirements for Farm Stream

If anyone wants to apply for AAIP under the Alberta Farm stream, they need to fulfill the following eligibility requirements.

Farm Management SkillsApplicants must have strong farm management skills. They can prove it with:
– Financial record for their current farm.

Sufficient Financial Resources1. Applicants need to invest at least $500,000 in a farming business in Alberta.
2. They must show documents proving they have a net worth of at least $500,000 or confirm they can access the same amount from other sources.
Primary production InvestmentApplicants must detail investment strategies in their business proposal and submit it along with their AAIP application.

Who is not Eligible to Apply for Alberta Farm Stream

Applicants are not eligible to apply under the Alberta Farm stream if they,

  • Have an active nomination that hasn’t expired and can be extended under another AAIP stream.
  • Got a letter describing that, they can’t re-apply to the AAIP for a while, applying during that time will result in rejection.
  • Are a foreigner living or working in Canada without valid temporary resident status.
  • Received a removal order from IRCC or Canada Border Services Agency.
  • International students studying in Canada, including those on co-op work placements or internships.
  • Temporary foreign worker living and working in a province other than Alberta.
  • Live-in caregivers living in Canada

Application Process

Follow these steps to apply for the Alberta Farm Stream.

Step 1. Read all Terms and Conditions:

AAIP has the right to close the application intake without prior notice so, applicants must read all the terms and conditions of AAIP before applying.

Step 2. Check the Eligibility Requirements:

To apply for the Farm Stream, you must have farm management skills, sufficient financial resources, and primary production investment. Make sure to check your eligibility requirements before submitting your application.

Note: The AAIP cannot ensure the assessment of all received applications or issue a nomination for all eligible candidates.

Step 3. Complete all the Forms with Required Documents:

You must have all the required documents to submit your application completely or accurately. Along with this, you must have to fill out all original Farm Stream forms with your original signature.

Applicants must complete and submit the following Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) forms.

  • IMM 0008 Generic Application Form for Canada
  • IMM 0008 Schedule 4: Economic Classes: Provincial Nominees
  • IMM 0008 Schedule 4A: Economic Classes: Business Nominees
  • IMM 0008DEP Additional Dependents/Declaration Form (if they have over 5 dependents)

You, your spouse, and dependents over 18 must complete these IRCC forms.

  • IMM 5669 Schedule A: Background/Declaration
  • IMM 5406 Additional Family Information
  • IMM 5476 Use of a Representative (if applicable)

Step 4. Pay the Application Fee:

After filling all the forms accurately, you will have to pay the application fee which you can do online through debit or credit card. Alberta Farm Stream’s application fee is $500 which is non-refundable.

Step 5. Send Your Application to the AAIP via Mail:

Mail your application with a copy of the fee receipt to the AAIP. Make sure to keep a copy of your application for record. Send your application by mail or courier to the address given below.

Note: If you send your application by email or fax, your application will be rejected by the AAIP.

Step 6. Assessment of Application:

After submitting your application, you will get an email from AAIP with your file number. Make sure your application is complete to avoid delays. 

The AAIP Program Officer will review your application using Farm Stream Eligibility Criteria. Your business plan will be sent to Alberta Agriculture and Irrigation for review.

The AAIP will contact you if they need more information. They might want to interview you via video call to clarify things. Be ready to answer questions and show how your business plan fits the Farm Stream requirements.

Step 7. Apply for Canada PR

If your application is approved by AAIP, you will get the Provincial Nomination package through email. The information in the package will tell you and your dependents how to apply for permanent residence to Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC).

Once you are nominated by Alberta Farm Stream, you can apply for permanent residency in Canada to IRCC.

Document Checklist for Alberta Farm Stream

Documents play an important role in getting PR in Canada. If you want to apply for Farm Stream under AAIP, you will need the following documents. Ensure your paperwork follows the Document Checklist order for a smooth process.

1. Valid Passport (must mention passport’s expiry and renewal date)

2. Relevant education assessments such as diplomas, degrees, licenses, certificates, or additional documents.

3. Employment reference letter – The reference letter must be on the company letterhead and signed by the employer. The reference letter includes:

  • Job title
  • Main responsibilities and education necessary for your job role
  • Period of employment

If you have an existing farm, its financial documents should be included in the reference letter.

4. An accountant’s report confirms you possess at least $500,000 in unrestricted Canadian funds.

5. Must have proposed business plan copy

6. Canadian financial institution endorsement

  • You must have an institution letterhead, proving that a Canadian financial institution financed your proposed farming business.
  • If you don’t need finance from a Canadian lender for your business, you just need a letter from a bank saying they have checked out your plans and finances.

Note: If any kind of misrepresentation or fraud is found in your application, then the AAIP will ban you for up to 5 years.

Processing time and Fee

The processing time for the Alberta Farm Stream is approximately 4 months and the application fee is $500.
