How many students go to Canada every year from India?
According to data taken from IRCC’s reports, we can answer the question “how many students go to Canada every year from India.” Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) releases information on the number of study permit holders by country of citizenship every year.
According to the latest data, about 225,865 Indian students went to Canada back in 2022. Overall, about 548,875 study permits were issued to students coming from 184 countries in 2022.
Let’s take a look at earlier data and see the rise in the number of study permits being granted over the years:
- 31,920 Indian students went to Canada in 2015 on study permit
- 52,625 study permits were granted to Indian students in 2016
- 82,935 Indian students received study permit back in 2017
- In 2018, 107,020 study permits were issued to Indian students
- About 138,600 Indian students received a study permit in 2019
- 80,875 and 169,335 study permits were issued to students from India in 2020 and 2021 respectively

What is a Study Permit?
IRCC issues study permits to eligible international students so they can study at a Designated Learning Institution (DLI) in Canada. A study permit is not a study visa as a permit only grants your stay and does not let you enter Canada.
With a study permit, you may need to get a study visa or another valid visa that lets you study in Canada.
Who is Eligible for a Study Permit?
The eligibility requirements for a study permit are:
- the individual needs to be enrolled at a Designated Learning Institution (DLI)
- must obey the laws and don’t have any criminal records
- the individual must be in good health
- must have adequate financial resources to pay tuition fees, living expenses (oneself and the family members who are coming to Canada with them), and return transportation (oneself and the family members who are coming to Canada with them)
- prove to the immigration officer that they’ll leave Canada once the study permit expires
- if necessary, they need to get a police clearance certificate and a medical exam
Funds Required to Study in Canada
One of the requirements of a study permit is to show adequate funds. IRCC made a recent announcement regarding funds required for a study permit . Actually, the funds that study permit applicants are required to show haven’t been updated since the 2000s and as the living standards costs are rising, it is necessary that students arriving in Canada are able to sustain their stay.
So, starting 1st January, 2024, the amount of funds required for each year are:
