What is an Express Entry draw?

Express Entry draws or Express Entry rounds of invitation are conducted by the Immigration Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) in order to issue Invitations to Apply (ITA) to eligible Express Entry profiles with a CRS score higher than or equal to the cut-off.

Once applicants get the ITA in the Express Entry draws, they must apply to IRCC for Canada PR through Express Entry within 60 days.

Category-based Express Entry Draws

Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada launched Express Entry Category-based Draws on 31 May 2023. The category-based draw will help invite candidates from highly demanding occupations/categories.

The categories of the draw depend on the labor market needs and only be decided after considering other factors. For 2023, the chosen categories are:

  • French language proficiency
  • Transport occupations
  • Agriculture and Agri-food occupations
  • STEM occupations
  • Trade occupations
  • Healthcare occupations

The minimum requirement to be eligible for category-based draws is to have at least 6 months of work experience in the last 3 years.

The work experience should be in an occupation that is listed under the list of eligible occupations for that particular category.

Further eligibility requirements depend on the particular round of draws that are conducted.

Express Entry Draw Types

There are different types of Express Entry draw conducted by IRCC. These are:

1. General

When IRCC holds a “General” round of draws, high-ranking candidates in any one of the Express Entry programs receive invitations.

This means, whether the candidate is eligible for the Federal Skilled Worker program, Federal Skilled Trades program, or Canadian Experience Class will be invited if they meet the draw’s requirements. Sometimes, candidates eligible in PNPs are also invited through this draw type.

2. Provincial Nominee Program

In the Provincial Nominee Program specific draws, high-ranking candidates eligible in the PNP are invited.

3. Category-Based Draw

IRCC launched this newest draw type on May 31, 2023. The category-based Express Entry draws invite candidates from particular occupations or categories only.

For instance, the 271st round of Express Entry draw was conducted for Healthcare Occupations only, since it was a Category-based draw.

    Next Express Entry Draw Prediction

The next Express Entry draw could be held on 02 February 2024. However, since the launch of Category-based draws, it has become hard to predict when the next draw might take place. Sometimes, they would come 5 days a week consecutively, other times there would be week-long delays between draws.

Therefore, the next draw might occur unexpectedly, and we must stay alert for any unforeseen delays or early draws. Keep visiting this page to learn all about the next Express Entry draw and its analysis by expert immigration consultants.

Am I eligible for Express Entry draw?

To be eligible for Express Entry draws, you must:

    • be either 18 years or older
    • prove your language skills in either English or French
    • have required educational requirements
    • have relevant work experience

    How does Express Entry work?

Step 1: Creating an Express Entry Profile

The first step in the Express Entry process is to create your profile through the GCKey or Sign-in partners. You will be required to answer a questionnaire that will assess your eligibility to create an express entry profile.

While creating your profile, you will have to provide all the information about your age, education, language proficiency, NOC code, etc.

An Express Entry profile stays in the pool for one year.

Step 2: Get your CRS score

Once you submit all the information while making your profile, the Express Entry system will assign you the Express Entry pathway you are eligible for.

The Express Entry offers three pathways, namely:

You will also get a score by the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) as per the provided personal information.

Step 3: Enter the Express Entry pool

Once you are assigned your Express Entry program and the CRS score, you will enter the Express Entry pool of eligible profiles.

Step 4: Express Entry draws are held

Once your profile is in the pool, you will get an invitation to apply (ITA) if your CRS score is higher than the draw’s cut-off. The cut-off is out of 1200 points.

    Step 5: Getting an ITA

Once you get the Invitation to Apply in the Express Entry draws, you have 60 days to upload complete documents, pay the fee, and apply to IRCC for Canada PR.

It must be remembered that Express Entry draws do not have a fixed date. They are usually held on alternative Wednesdays, but that is not an official schedule.

Common Mistakes in Express Entry Profiles

To increase your chances of receiving an ITA, one should ensure that they don’t commit the same common mistakes that others make in their Express Entry profiles.

Some very common mistakes found in Express Entry profiles are:

    • Not choosing the right NOC code or not fulfilling the NOC requirements
    • Not providing adequate proof of funds
    • Information not up-to-date or incorrect information filed in
    • Not meeting language requirements
    • Not meeting work experience requirements

Ways to Increase chances in Express Entry draw

Increasing your chances in the Canada Express Entry draw is directly related to a high CRS score. Your CRS score depends on the following factors:

    • Age
    • Academic proficiency
    • Language proficiency
    • Canadian work experience
    • Qualifications of your partner (if they are accompanying you)
    • Additional points such as the TEER level of your NOC code, french language proficiency, Canadian education or work experience, etc.

You can significantly increase your chances of getting an ITA in Canada Express Entry draws if you can improve your score for the above factors. For instance, you can aim for a high score in Language proficiency, learn French, attempt to get a job in Canada, etc.

The best way to improve your chances of getting an ITA in the Express Entry draw is to consult an authorized immigration consultant. Nobody understands the immigration system better than them.

Moreover, a licensed immigration consultant will be equipped with professional education and experience to help you score the highest possible CRS score for your profile.
