Canada Immigration- A Financially feasible option

While planning to permanently move to the maple leaf country-Canada, one question that often perturbs a person is the amount of fund required for going through the process/ attaining Permanent Residence Visa. The good news is- it is really affordable to move to a promising country like Canada! The Immigration, Refugee and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) have kept all the fees and charges viable and very affordable.

Canada is the growing economy with potential options for everyone- be it engaging in your own business or be employed with a top-notch company. The standard of living it offers is beyond one’s hopes. To cut it short, Canada is an excellent country where you can well-settle with your family at an ‘easy on the pocket’ cost.

Do I Qualify For Canada PR?

The estimation of the total cost for immigrating to Canada depends upon many factors. To name a few such as the kind of visa you applied for, visa application fees, medical examination fees, airfares to Canada, English language test fees, health insurance fees, how many members are accompanying, place of accommodation, and other miscellaneous factors. However, a general consensus states the following costs which are fixed to be borne by you:

  • Educational Credential Assessment (ECA) : about 200 Canadian $

Educational Credential Assessment (ECA) is an attestation of your educational qualifications. Before getting started with your immigration process, it is vital to get your ECA done. The purpose of getting your education assessed is to know whether or not your qualifications are at par with that of Canadian standards. Therefore, all those applicants who have attained their education from outside of Canada are required to first get their ECA report. There are different bodies from where you can get your educational credentials assessed, depending on your field of study. However, one major body which assesses you education is Canada’s World Education Services. The cost for your Educational Credential Assessment Report is Canadian $ 200.

  • IELTS test fee: 12000 INR

IELTS stands for International English Language Testing Standards. It is an English proficiency test which a candidate needs to appear for in order to prove his/her ability to speak, write, listen and read in Canada’s native language English. A standard fee of INR 12,000 is charged for a single attempt of IELTS examination (known as Registration fee). The exam consist of 4 modules namely Reading, Writing, Listening and Speaking. To get through the test, make sure you get IELTS exam assistance kit from Talent Connected Worldwide. Our professionally designed study material is in accordance with the latest course outline.

  • Permanent Residence fee (called PR fee or RPRF)- Primary Applicant: CAN $550 Secondary Applicant: CAN $550 & Child Applicant: CAN $150

Permanent Resident Fee is the fee you pay to Government of Canada as basic payment for visa application processing. You can pay this before or upon arrival in the country. After you comply with this fee, CIC (Citizenship and Immigration Canada) grants you the right to be a Permanent Resident of Canada and therefore, this fee is also called Right to Permanent Resident Fee (RPRF). The primary applicant needs to pay Canadian $550. If he/she is accompanying anyone as a secondary applicant, then an extra fee of $500 is to be paid. Similarly, if any child is accompanying you, an extra fee amounting to Canadian $150 per child is to be paid. This fee is mandatory to be paid and is non-refundable in case your visa application is rejected.

  • Travelling Ticket

The airfare to Canada per person is 1300$ to 1800$. This cost is variable with the size of family/ number of members accompanying you.

  • Medical fee: 5000 - 9000 INR

To be fully eligible to enter Canada as a Permanent Resident, an applicant mandatorily need to undergo a medical examination. This examination is necessary as the government has to be certain that the population of Canada is in utmost safety from any communicable virus that the immigrant may be bringing in. Therefore, a person has to be healthy and must not be carrying any communicable disease such as Tuberculosis, Hepatitis, etc. A series of medical tests costs you around 5000-9000 INR.

  • Passport Cost

Your Indian Passport is very important to land on Canadian soil. Canadian authorities first validate your identity through your passport for which a nominal charge of Rs. 1,000 to Rs. 2,000 is charged (around CAN $20). This amount is per person cost and naturally goes up with number of members accompanying you.

  • Miscellaneous expenditure:

Apart from the above mentioned expenses, there are certain payments that are situational and you may need to incur them. For instance, State nomination fee. Other charges include Police Clearance Certificate (PCC) cost. PCC is to be obtained so that you can claim a clean legal history on your name. Any person with any ongoing charges/ court case is prohibited to leave the country. Other cost includes Spouse’s IELTS (if he/she is willing to give IELTS exam), Spouse Educational Credential Assessment (ECA), etc.

  • Fund Management for ‘Proof of Fund’:

This is not a physical cost to be paid as fee. Fund management is maintenance of fund to be showcased by the applicant (as Proof of Fund) to Canadian government. The funds are necessary to showcase to the immigration authorities as the government needs to be assured that you can sustain yourself and accompanying family members after immigrating to the country. Showcasing Proof of Fund is mandatory under Express Entry’s Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP) and Federal Trade Worker Program (FSTP). For Canadian Experience Class, it is not mandatory to showcase funds. Under Provincial Nomination Programs (PNPs) it may or may not require by the province to show funds.

Note that the borrowed amount of money cannot be considered as Fund. Moreover, these assets count as Proof of Fund:

  • Cash
  • Savings account Balance
  • Bonds, shares, debentures, etc.
  • Other Financial assets

The amount of money required for your immigration will depend on the size of the family/ number of members migrating with you. Below is the list of minimum funds required -

Number of Family Members

Funds Required (in Canadian dollars)

For each additional family member

Note that the above mentioned costs are in accordance with the current cost chart given by Canadian immigration authorities. Any change anytime by the Canada Immigration department as per the policies and regulations by the government can come in existence.
